I am all for do-it-yourself legal books and websites. Not because I think that you should actually be your own lawyer, but because I think that an educated client is a good client. He or she will appreciate the value of an attorney, will understand problems and important issues, and will be in a position to make educated decisions where it matters.
An educated client is also able to spot an incompetent lawyer, is able to save money on routine legal matters, and knows when it is necessary to bring in an expert, i.e. an attorney experienced in the relevant field.
I have looked at many DIY legal books and find that the publications by Nolo are still the best. For example, if you are thinking of starting a business, check out the "Legal Guide for Starting and Running a Small Business."
As for web resources regarding small business issues, I like the CCH business Owner’s Toolkit, the Small Business and Self-Employed One-Stop Resource by the IRS and New York State’s NY Loves Small Business site.
